Debunking Stereotypes

In September 2010 the 1st and 2nd year students of the I/M/D department of the Royal Academy of Art (KABK) in The Hague have been asked to develop concepts and create prototypes of interactive media applications (installations, websites, mobile phone apps etc) in some way breaking with the stereotypical perception of African society and culture and shifting our paradigms regarding this part of the world. The selected results of the project were presented at the Business Summit Netherlands-Africa in Wassenaar on November 3, 2010.

The works of students include working prototypes of an interactive game on a mobile device (http://zambezi.mobi/), a poster campaign with QR-codes (http://www.abderrahmane.nl/africa/), a set of different audio-visual installations and web development projects.

The project is a result of an intensive collaboration between the KABK, TU Delft and the STT Netherlands Study Center for Technology Trends in The Hague.

Classic Game Code Visualized

The Atari 2600's cartridge-based videogames are quaint by today's standards, but programmer/artist Ben Fry spins contemporary visualizations out of the raw code and data of classic titles such as Pac Man and Pitfall.

Fry's distellamap project provides an unexpectedly-beautiful view of ancient assembly language columns:

"When a byte of data (as opposed to code) is found in the cartridge, it is shown as an orange row: a solid block for a '1' or a dot for a '0'. The row is eight elements long, representing a whole byte. This usually means that the images can be seen in their entirety when a series of bytes are shown as rows. The images were often stored upside-down as a programming method."

Fry's visualization reveals how the original game code intersected with the Atari 2600's primitive graphics and limited data. Today's games are generally too complex to visualize in this way, although play patterns are easier to track and show (for example, as heat maps).

Kleurbleur mag zich wel op de eigen schouder kloppen, want de jongens zijn jong,maar gaan zich zeker naar de VJ top werken. Hun materiaal laat dit toe. Kleurrijke beelden met een vleugje menselijke warmte. Mark Ridder heeft Interactive Media Design gestudeerd aan de koninklijke academie van beeldende kunsten in Den Haag en treedde reeds op als VJ in Europa onder de naam video jockey MA.DE. Yesterday morning I (Victor Zwiers, 3e year student) held a presentation about my work and department at the Yogjakarta Art Academy (ISI) in Indonesia. The presentation was held for a group of 30 students from various departments and lasted 2,5 hours. This presentation was part of my residency at Ruang MES56 to support the local art scene of Yogjakarta. The art education here in Indonesia is still in a pre-mature state and students are being restricted by a inefficient educational system. My presentation ended with a discussion about modern art and the progress of contemporary photography in Indonesia, which was actively participated regardless of the language barrier.

There was quite some interest in Interactive/Media/Design as department because of its focus on personal and artistic development. This presentation will be followed up by a workshop Conceptual Portrait for students of ISI, which I will be giving together with some members of Ruang MES56. More about the progression of this workshop will follow soon.

Dance4Life heeft dit jaar een case ter beschikking gesteld om studenten uit te dagen om een (interactieve) campagne te ontwikkelen. Deze cases worden beoordeeld door een vakjury en de beste campagnevoorstellen van de studenten mogen deelnemen aan de masterclass van de Dag van het Interactief Talent op 21 april 2010. Op deze dag wordt elk team bijgestaan door professionals vanuit de interactieve VEA-bureaus. Ze leren dan vanuit de praktijk hoe je een goed idee kunt uitwerken in een compleet en kloppend interactief concept. De teams die in deze Masterclass het beste uit de verf komen, dingen mee voor de dit. Award voor jong aanstormend interactief talent.

Incentives

Naast de kans op een dit. Award krijgen de deelnemers veel persaandacht en kunnen ze zich profileren naar de bureauwereld. VEA biedt ze een podium zodat ze kans kunnen maken op een baan bij een gerenommeerd interactief reclamebureau. Ook geeft Dance4Life een jaar lang gratis condooms weg en kaartjes voor het welbekende Dance4Life Event op 23 november 2010.
